How to form it

When Form Example
Formal written prose, lectures, or official documents (verb-modifying) Noun + 에 대하여 한국 경제에 대하여 / 환경 문제에 대하여
Spoken colloquial or semi-formal discourse (verb-modifying) Noun + 에 대해 / 에 대해서 그 일에 대해 / 진로에 대해서 이야기하다
Adnominal noun-modifying phrase before a noun Noun + 에 대한 + Noun 인공지능에 대한 연구 / 미래에 대한 불안
With delimiter particles (은/는/도) Noun + 에 대해서는 / 에 대해서도 이 안건에 대해서는 / 그 문제에 대해서도

When communicating in Korean, beginner learners frequently rely on direct object markers to express the subject of their thoughts or speech. However, as you advance into intermediate and professional domains—giving presentations, writing essays, conducting meetings, or discussing abstract concepts—you need a dedicated thematic framing construction.

The construction Noun + 에 대하여 (along with its conversational variants 에 대해 / 에 대해서 and its adnominal modifier 에 대한) is Korean’s definitive tool for establishing the thematic focus or intellectual subject matter:

$$ \text{Thematic Noun} + \textbf{에 대하여 / 대해(서)}, \quad \text{[Speech / Thought / Inquiry / Analysis]}$$

“About / Regarding / Concerning / On the subject of [Topic], [Action] takes place.”

1. Register Spectrum: Written vs. Spoken Formulations

While all variants stem from the root verb 대하다 (to face, treat, or address), they occupy distinct stylistic registers:

VariationRegister / MediumTypical EnvironmentExample Sentence
Noun + 에 대하여Formal WrittenAcademic journals, white papers, official speeches현대 경제의 구조적 모순에 대하여 고찰하다.
Noun + 에 대해Neutral PolishedPresentations, business emails, lectures신규 프로젝트에 대해 간략히 브리핑하겠습니다.
Noun + 에 대해서Spoken Colloquial (해요체)Everyday discussions, interviews, chats어제 있었던 일에 대해서 이야기 좀 할까?
Noun + 에 대한 + NAdnominal Noun ModifierModifying a following noun phrase환경 보호에 대한 시민들의 관심이 높다.

2. The Golden Syntactic Rule: ‘에 대하여’ (Adverbial) vs. ‘에 대한’ (Adnominal)

One of the most frequent grammar traps on the TOPIK exam and in formal writing is confusing the adverbial form with the adnominal modifier form:

$\begin{aligned} \text{Noun} + \textbf{에 대하여 / 대해(서)} &\longrightarrow \textbf{Modifies a Verb / Predicate (Adverbial)} \ \text{Noun} + \textbf{에 대한} &\longrightarrow \textbf{Modifies a Following Noun (Adnominal)} \end{aligned}$$

Diagnostic Examples:

[Adverbial usage modifying verbs: 조사하다, 토론하다, 생각하다]
✅ 우리는 한국 문화에 대하여 조사했습니다.
   (We investigated regarding Korean culture).

[Adnominal usage modifying nouns: 연구, 보고서, 질문]
✅ 한국 문화에 대한 보고서를 작성했습니다.
(We drafted a report about Korean culture).
❌ 한국 문화에 대하여 보고서를 작성했습니다. (Grammatical error!).

3. ‘에 대하여’ vs. Direct Object Marker ‘을/를’

Learners frequently calque English sentences like “I like about you” or “I called about the car” awkwardly. The boundary is straightforward:

MarkerRoleGoverning PredicatesExample
-을/를Direct Target / PatientDirect emotional verbs (좋아하다, 사랑하다), direct physical actions (읽다, 사다)그 사람을 좋아해요. (I like him).
-에 대하여Thematic Scope / DomainCognitive & communicative verbs (말하다, 생각하다, 토론하다, 연구하다, 질문하다)그 사람의 태도에 대해 이야기했어요. (Talked about his attitude).

Error Correction:

  • ❌ 나는 너에 대해 사랑해. (Bizarre: “I love on the abstract subject of you”).
  • ✅ 나는 너를 사랑해. (Natural direct love).
  • ❌ 그 영화에 대해 봤어요? (Awkward).
  • ✅ 그 영화를 봤어요? (Natural: Did you watch the movie?).
  • ✅ 그 영화의 결말에 대해 어떻게 생각해요? (Natural: What do you think about the film’s ending?).

4. High-Frequency Thematic Collocations

In daily academic, professional, and personal communication, 에 대해(서) pairs constantly with intellectual verbs and nouns:

1. Thoughts & Deliberations (생각하다, 고민하다)

  • 미래의 진로에 대해 진지하게 고민하고 있습니다. (I am seriously contemplating about my future career path).
  • 그 제안에 대해서는 다시 한번 검토해 보겠습니다. (Regarding that proposal, I will review it once more).

2. Research & Analysis (연구하다, 조사하다, 발표하다)

  • 기후 변화가 농업에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구 논문. (A research paper on the impact of climate change on agriculture).
  • 소비자 만족도에 대한 설문 조사를 실시했습니다. (We conducted a questionnaire survey regarding customer satisfaction).

3. Delimiter Stacking (에 대해서는, 에 대해서도)

Adding topic particles (-는) or inclusive particles (-도) allows nuanced contrast:

  • 다른 안건에 대해서는 동의하지만, 예산안에 대해서는 동의하기 어렵습니다. (Regarding other agenda items I agree, but regarding the budget draft it is difficult to agree).

5. Summary Diagnostic Checklist

When applying 에 대하여 / 에 대해(서) / 에 대한:

  1. Is the phrase modifying an action verb like speak, think, write, or research? Use 에 대하여 (written) or 에 대해(서) (spoken).
  2. Is the phrase modifying a following noun like research, question, attitude, or report? Use Noun + 에 대한 + Noun (e.g., 진실에 대한 탐구).
  3. Is the predicate an immediate direct emotional verb (like, dislike, love)? STOP! Use the direct object marker 을/를 instead.
  4. Did you keep the particle ‘에’ attached? Always verify: Noun + 에 대하여 (never drop the 에).

Common questions

What is the difference between '에 대해', '에 대하여', and '에 대해서'?

They are stylistic variants of the same grammatical construction: (1) 에 대하여 is the classical written literary form found in essays, academic papers, and news headlines; (2) 에 대해 is the concise spoken/written form; (3) 에 대해서 incorporates the particle -서, making it the most rhythmic, natural, and popular choice in everyday conversation.

How do I choose between '에 대하여' and '을/를'?

Use 을/를 when the noun is the direct patient of an action (책을 읽다 = read a book; 사람을 만나다 = meet a person). Use 에 대하여 when the noun is the overarching cognitive subject or theme of an intellectual process (한국 역사에 대해 토론하다 = debate about Korean history; 미래에 대해 생각하다 = think about the future).

Can '에 대한' be followed by any noun?

Yes! Any cognitive, communicative, or relational noun can be modified: ...에 대한 생각 (thoughts on...), ...에 대한 질문 (questions about...), ...에 대한 오해 (misconceptions regarding...), ...에 대한 관심 (interest in...).

Is '에 대하여서' used?

While morphologically possible, it is archaic and virtually unused in contemporary Korean. Always use either '에 대하여' (written) or '에 대해서' (spoken).
