-던데②
-던데②: Past Background Before Suggestions and Questions
Connective clause ending: recalling a relevant past scene, condition, or fact witnessed firsthand, and using it as the conversational background/premise to introduce a suggestion, polite command, invitation, or follow-up question in the subsequent clause ('I noticed/experienced that... so...').
How to form it
| When | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb or Adjective stem in present retrospective connective | Stem + -
While Unit -던데① explored how native speakers use -던데(요) as a sentence-final conversational closer to share an observation with lingering nuance, -던데② focuses on its powerful role as a connective bridge (연결어미) between two clauses:
$$ \text{[Clause 1: Personal Past Observation]} + \textbf{-던데}, \quad \text{[Clause 2: Suggestion / Directive / Inquiry / Action]}$$
In natural Korean communication, blurting out a sudden suggestion or request (e.g. “Let’s go eat sushi!” or “Wear a thick jacket!”) can feel abrupt. Using -던데 provides immediate empirical justification based on what you personally saw, heard, or experienced just moments or days ago:
“I saw/experienced that [Scene], so [Why don’t we / Please / What do you think]?”
1. High-Frequency Communicative Patterns of Connective ‘-던데’
1. The Suggestion & Invitation Formula (-던데, -(으)ㄹ까요? / -자)
Using your past observation to propose an activity:
밖에 눈이 제법 많이 내리던데, 오늘은 따뜻한 국물 요리 먹으러 갈까요?
I noticed snow was falling quite heavily outside; shall we go eat some hot soup today?
(Observation: Heavy snow falling -> Suggestion: Hot soup).
저 새로 생긴 카페 인테리어가 아주 예쁘던데, 이번 주말에 같이 가보자.
I noticed the interior of that newly opened cafe was very pretty; let's go together this weekend!
(Observation: Pretty cafe -> Invitation: Let's visit).
2. The Thoughtful Advice & Warning Formula (-던데, -(으)세요)
Providing advice that is grounded in direct sensory witness rather than abstract lecturing:
비 때문에 도로가 많이 미끄럽던데, 운전 조심해서 하세요.
I noticed the roads were very slick from the rain, so please drive carefully.
환절기라 감기 걸린 환자가 병원에 많던데, 따뜻한 물 자주 챙겨 드세요.
I noticed there were lots of cold patients at the clinic due to the change of seasons; drink warm water often.
3. The Contextual Inquiry Formula (-던데, -나요? / -어요?)
Asking a question based on an intriguing clue you observed:
사무실 책상 위에 꽃다발이 놓여 있던데, 오늘 무슨 좋은 일 있으세요?
I noticed a bouquet of flowers was placed on your office desk; do you have something special going on today?
아까 민수 씨 표정이 많이 어둡던데, 혹시 무슨 일 있는지 아세요?
I noticed Minsu's expression was very dark earlier; do you happen to know if something happened?
2. Structural Matrix: ‘-던데’ vs. ‘-는데’ vs. ‘-더니’
| Connective | Nature of Clause 1 | Role of Clause 1 | Follow-up Clause Flexibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| -던데 | Firsthand past observation (회상) | Grounding context for speaker’s next conversational move | Highly flexible: suggestions, commands, questions, comments |
| -는데 | Neutral present fact or general state | General background / introduction | Highly flexible across all communicative speech acts |
| -더니 | Sequential observed past action/state | Direct cause or chronological sequel | Usually declarative result; commands/suggestions are unnatural |
Contrast Drill:
- 비가 오던데 우산 챙겨요: (Natural) I personally saw it was raining, so take an umbrella!
- 비가 오더니 날씨가 쌀쌀해졌다: (Natural) It rained, and subsequently the weather turned chilly.
- 비가 오는데 어디 가세요?: (Natural) It’s raining; where are you heading?
3. Conjugation Guide Across Word Classes & Tenses
Connecting predicates with -던데 is straightforward because the suffix does not alter for consonants or vowels:
가다 (to go) → 가던데
먹다 (to eat) → 먹던데
예쁘다 (pretty) → 예쁘던데
작다 (small) → 작던데
학생이다 (student) → 학생이던데
Incorporating Tense Morphemes:
- Uncompleted / Ongoing Witness (Stem + -던데):
- 퇴근 시간에 지하철에 사람이 많던데 버스를 타는 게 낫겠어요. (I saw there were many people in the subway during rush hour; taking the bus might be better).
- Completed Past Result Observed (-었던/았던데):
- 공연 티켓이 이미 다 매진되었던데, 다른 날짜로 알아볼까요? (I saw that the performance tickets had already completely sold out; shall we look for another date?).
- Witnessed Deduction / Conjecture (-겠던데):
- 짐이 너무 무거워서 혼자 들기 힘들겠던데, 제가 도와드릴게요. (From what I saw, the luggage looked like it would be tough to carry alone; let me help you).
4. Subject Constraints & Common Pitfalls
Rule 1: The Observer Stance
Just like its sister endings, -던데 requires the speaker to act as an eyewitness. You cannot observe your own deliberate volitional actions as a detached spectator:
- ❌ 제가 어제 피자를 맛있게 먹던데, 오늘은 파스타를 먹을래요. (Ungrammatical: Out-of-body violation).
- ✅ 제가 어제 피자를 맛있게 먹었는데, 오늘은 파스타를 먹을래요. (Natural: Standard -는데).
- ✅ 민수 씨가 어제 피자를 맛있게 먹던데, 오늘도 피자를 시킬까요? (Natural: Witnessed Minsu).
Rule 2: Avoiding Pure Hearsay
Do not use -던데 for rumors or second-hand information you merely heard through word-of-mouth:
- ❌ 뉴스에서 내일 비 온다고 들었는데 → 뉴스에서 비 오던데 (Misleading: implies you witnessed the rain yourself).
- ✅ 뉴스에서 그러는데 내일 비가 온대요. (Correct hearsay pattern).
5. Summary Diagnostic Checklist
When employing connective -던데:
- Did you personally witness the situation in Clause 1? Ensure Clause 1 stems from personal memory.
- Are you preparing to make a suggestion, give advice, or ask a question in Clause 2? Connect with -던데 to provide immediate, convincing context.
- Is the subject of Clause 1 an external party, ambient scene, or weather? If the subject is your own volitional action, switch to standard -았/었는데.
- Is the outcome a direct mechanical consequence? If you are simply recounting Cause $ \rightarrow$ Result without a communicative proposal, consider -더니 instead.

Common questions
What kinds of sentence types typically follow connective -던데?
Connective -던데 is exceptionally versatile in spoken discourse. It commonly precedes: (1) Suggestions/Proposals: -을까요?, -(으)ㅂ시다, -자 (날씨가 춥던데 따뜻한 차 마실까요?); (2) Directives/Advice: -(으)세요, -아/어 보세요 (길이 미끄럽던데 조심하세요); (3) Questions: -나요?, -어요? (회의실에 불이 켜져 있던데 누가 있나요?); and (4) Explanations of subsequent actions.
Can -던데 be used for contrast like -지만?
Yes! Like standard -는데, -던데 can establish a contrastive background between what the speaker observed and a subsequent reality: '어제까지는 날씨가 포근하던데 오늘은 갑자기 영하로 떨어졌네요' (Up until yesterday the weather was mild, but today it suddenly dropped below freezing).
How does -던데 differ from -더니?
-더니 links an observed past cause directly to an ensuing consequence or change (e.g., '열심히 연습하더니 결국 우승했다' = He practiced hard, and as a result eventually won). -던데 does not force a direct causal link; it simply sets the background scene before the speaker makes a separate conversational move (suggestion, question, or comment).
Can -던데 connect two independent clauses about unrelated people?
Yes. Because -던데 provides circumstantial background context, the subjects of Clause 1 and Clause 2 frequently differ: '민수 씨는 벌써 퇴근하던데, 지수 씨는 야근하세요?' (Minsu was already leaving work; are you working overtime, Jisu?).
