이야
이야: Spoken Emphasis After a Noun — Not the Copula
Auxiliary particle for spoken emphasis after a noun or adverbial — spotlight, not the ‘to be’ ending.
How to form it
| When | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Noun with batchim | N이야 | 오늘이야 / 집이야 |
| Noun without batchim | N야 | 나야 / 여기야 / 그게야 |
| Not this slot | 학생이야 (copula) | 이다 intimate statement — different word |
이야 (and 야 after open syllables) is a spoken emphasis particle. It spotlights a noun the way a finger tap on the table spotlights a word.
Curriculum gloss: as for — casual emphasis, spoken. 우리말샘 이야 「002」 / 야 「014」: auxiliary particle for emphasis. That is this page. The Hangul also appears as an interjection and as the intimate copula — three doors, one spelling.
What it does — and why learners keep colliding with 이다
Emphatic particle:
오늘이야 좀 쉬자.
가격이야 괜찮지.
집이야 작아도 위치는 좋아.
나야 상관없는데.
여기야 조용하지.
Intimate copula (이다):
학생이야.
내 동생이야.
Both can end a short utterance. The difference is structure: copula 이야 is the predicate; particle 이야 attaches to a noun that is not finishing the sentence as “X is.” Prosody and what follows usually decide — but writing learners must watch the grammar, not just the letters.
English “as for…” over-promises a formal topic shift. Korean 이야/야 is lighter and more oral — a nudge, not a debate-stage “regarding.”
Forms
| Host | Particle | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Noun with batchim | 이야 | 오늘이야, 집이야, 값이야 |
| Open syllable | 야 | 나야, 여기야, 그게야 |
| Careful topic | prefer 은/는 | 오늘은, 나는 |
월세야 비싸도 걸어 다니기 편해.
교통이야 말할 것도 없고.
Supplementary slot, spoken register: do not force it into 합니다체 reports.
Near neighbours
| Form | Job |
|---|---|
| 은/는 | Default topic / contrast |
| 이야 / 야 | Casual emphasis spotlight |
| 이다 이야 | “is” intimate ending |
| Interjection 이야 | Surprise cry |
가격은 괜찮아요. neutral topic
가격이야 괜찮지. spoken emphasis nudge
가격이에요. copula polite
If you only need to name the topic without oral punch, 은/는 vs 이/가 is enough — and safer upward.
When to use — and when to skip
Use it among peers when you want a light “this one, at least / this part…” spotlight in banmal or soft 해요 chat.
Skip it when:
- addressing seniors carefully;
- writing formal descriptions of a neighbourhood;
- the sentence actually needs the copula “X is Y.”
Practice rule: if removing 이야/야 still leaves a grammatical sentence and you only lost a spoken nudge, you were using the particle. If removing it destroys “X is…,” you were in 이다 territory.

Common questions
Is English ‘as for’ exact?
Rough. 이야/야 is spoken emphasis or spotlight; eun-neun is the general topic tool.
OK with teachers?
It is casual. Prefer 은/는 or plain phrasing in careful 해요/합니다 speech.
Interjection 이야?
Dictionary sense 「001」 is a cry of surprise/effort — separate from the particle.
Can it follow adverbials?
Dictionary allows some adverbial hosts for the emphasis particle. Noun hosts are the teaching core.
