Using -으십시오 with a friend does not sound “extra polite.” It sounds like you are reading a sign at them.

Same speech-level family

-습니다, -습니까 is the statement/question side of this formal polite world. -으십시오 is the command side. Learn them as one register, two jobs.

Same-unit partner

Directions need place particles too — 에서, 까지 for from here to there while the announcement tells you what to do.

Common questions

Can I use -으십시오 with classmates?

It will sound like a public announcement. For everyday polite requests, use [[g:euseyo]].

Is this the same level as 합니다?

Yes in speech-level terms — formal polite (하십시오체 / 합니다체 family). Statements use [[g:hamnida-che]]; commands use -으십시오.

What about 먹으십시오 vs 드십시오?

Classroom morphology is 먹으십시오. Service and honorific speech often switches the verb (드시다). Learn the ending pattern first; special honorific verbs are a separate habit.

Does the dictionary list -으십시오?

우리말샘 lists -으십시오 after consonant verb stems (excluding ) for polite commands and urging. Classroom Korean pairs it with -십시오 after vowel and stems.
