-으면 좋겠다
-으면 좋겠다: I Wish / It Would Be Nice If
Modality: if [clause], it would be good — speaker wish or hopeful preference.
How to form it
| When | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Stem without batchim / ㄹ | -면 좋겠다 | 오면 좋겠다 / 살면 좋겠다 (살다 → 살면) |
| Stem with batchim | -으면 좋겠다 | 있으면 좋겠다 / 싸면 좋겠다 |
| Past wish about now | -었으면 좋겠다 | 갔으면 좋겠다 / 알았으면 좋겠어요 |
| Polite | -으면 좋겠어요 | 할인되면 좋겠어요 |
-으면 좋겠다 is the everyday wish / preference package: it would be good if…, I hope…, I wish….
Curriculum gloss: I wish, it would be nice if. Formally it is conditional -으면 plus 좋겠다 (좋다 + -겠- in a fixed hopeful reading). Learners meet 좋겠어요 constantly in polite speech.
Shape
Same attachment rules as -으면:
| Stem | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| No batchim / ㄹ | -면 좋겠다 | 오면 좋겠다, 팔면 좋겠다 |
| Batchim | -으면 좋겠다 | 있으면 좋겠다, 작으면 좋겠다 |
| Soft contrary wish | -었으면 좋겠다 | 알았으면 좋겠어요 |
할인되면 좋겠어요.
이 색이 있으면 좋겠어요.
조금 더 편했으면 좋겠어요.
내일 날씨가 맑으면 좋겠어요.
Versus -고 싶다
| Pattern | Job |
|---|---|
| -고 싶다 | Desire to do something (I want to buy) |
| -으면 좋겠다 | Wish that a situation hold (I hope it’s on sale) |
사고 싶어요. I want to buy (it)
싸면 좋겠어요. It’d be nice if it were cheap
샀으면 좋겠어요. I wish I had bought it / if only I’d bought it
Versus bare -으면 and bare -겠-
-으면 alone is a real conditional (if X, then Y). Here the then is fixed as 좋겠다 — desirability.
-겠- elsewhere predicts or intends. Inside 좋겠다, do not over-teach “future tense”; teach wish formula.
Softness
Compared with commands or strong needs (-어야 되다), this pattern stays preferential:
사이즈를 바꿔 주세요. direct request
사이즈가 맞으면 좋겠어요. soft preference / hope
Useful in shops when you do not want to sound demanding.
Quick checks
- Attach -면 / -으면 like the conditional, then 좋겠다/좋겠어요.
- Use -었으면 좋겠다 for ‘if only…’ colour.
- Want-to-do → -고 싶다; hope-it-is → -으면 좋겠다.
Ask: am I hoping a situation turns out a certain way? If yes, this chunk is the default spoken wish.

Common questions
Is -겠- future tense here?
In 좋겠다 / 좋겠어요 the -겠- is part of a set wish formula, not the same job as predictive get alone. Read the whole chunk as a wish.
When do I use -었으면 좋겠다?
When the wish is framed as contrary to current reality (‘if only it were / had…’). Very common in soft complaints and hopes.
Can it wish for someone else’s action?
Yes: 빨리 와 줬으면 좋겠어요. Still a wish about a situation, not a bare imperative.
